A cheap way to explore the city and meet the locals. The entire journey takes three hours and has 15 stops. You can hop off at any stop, but each stop isn’t clearly marked so make sure to double check before you jump off, literally.
The train is very basic, no air con, simple seating on both sides of the trains and windows open to allow for airflow. People and vendors along with merchandise quickly fill the isles and there is always something happening. That is what makes this journey so great, its not a tourist attraction as much as it is used locally for convenience and cost.
The train starts each day at 6:10 am and ends at 22:00.
How to get there
The best place to board is at Yangon’s downtown train station off Pansodan and Bogyoke Aung San Roads. For the circle train, you have to buy tickets in person (or a travel agency) on platform 7. Enter via the east entrance, at the peak of Pansodan Bridge and head straight down the stairs through the gates, and onto the platform. The very friendly train station manager awaits inside his small booth, halfway down the platform with decent English, your ticket, and instructions on how to board.
The cost is about 100 – 200 Kyat.
